This month an important historical event will be celebrated in our village and I have been asked if I will participate at the crafts fair/ farmers market. Of course, I will, but preferably not in my 21st century clothes. As the original event took place late 18th century I decided to do a little research on fashion during that time period, with the focus on the poor and middle class woman. (All those 18th century gowns look amazing, but the people who could afford them wouldn't be selling vegetables on a farmers market.)

In the end I decided not to make a historically correct outfit, for various reasons:
-1 time only event
-time restrictions (research, pattern making and putting the items together would have taken a lot of time)
-costs (meters and meters of fabric needed)

Some colleagues came up with the idea to make something simple for the four of us: a simple skirt (made from curtains) and a scarf, to wear with a rtw white blouse or shirt. In addition I decided to make an apron to go over the skirt, as was common in those days, and a cap (inspiration and tutorials are linked below).

For the apron I used some cotton fabric that I was gifted years ago and the cap is made from an old cotton bed sheet.

More FleeceFun hats

De Dino muts (eigenlijk meer een Draken muts, maar goed...) (Child Small) bleek veel te klein voor de 4-jarige. Zelfs voor de 2-jarige was hij aan de kleine kant. Daarom besloot ik er nog eentje te maken, die wel zou passen, maar het bleef niet bij die ene. Het werden er 3.

De tweede muts (Adult Medium) zat mij vrij ruim op het hoofd en was dus veel te groot voor een kind. Aangezien de naaimachine het niet meer zo zag zitten en nogal wat steken oversloeg, had ik er niet zoveel zin in om weer aan de slag te gaan. Maar ik had een passende muts beloofd...

Vanwege de problemen bij het vinden van de goede maat, besloot ik eerst een 'Child Medium' te maken voor de 2-jarige. Daarna zou ik besluiten of dit de goede maat was voor een drakenmuts of dat Adult Small beter zou zijn. Gelukkig lag er nog een restje paarse dubbelzijdige fleece dat perfect was voor een klein meisje. Helaas had ik de problemen met de naaimachine tot dan toe nog niet op kunnen lossen. Tijdens het naaien van de laatste naad kwam ik erachter wat het probleem was en heb ik muts nr 4 (Adult Small) zonder problemen in elkaar kunnen zetten.

Gelukkig pasten deze mutsen wel goed.

The first fleece hat (Child Small) turned out to be too small for the 4-yr old, and almost too small for the 2-yr old. Therefore I decided to make another one. At least that's what I thought, it turned out to be 3 hats....
The second hat (Adult Medium) was way too big. It fitted me easily. Thanks to problems with my sewing machine I almost quit. Almost...because I promised the boy a fitting hat.

Due to the sizing issues, I thought it would be a good idea to make a size "Child Medium" for the 2-yr old first to check out the size. Lucky for me, there was some purple double-sided fleece in the stash. Perfect for the little girl. Unlucky for me, the sewing machine issues weren't over yet....
When stitching the last seam I finally found the source of the problems and I was able to sew the last hat (Adult Small) without trouble!

I'm happy to let you know that these hats fit their new owners perfectly.

Dino hat

Vandaag had ik zin in een gemakkelijk projectje met restjes stof. Aangezien een neefje bijna jarig is besloot ik iets voor hem te maken. Mijn eerste gedachte was een Spiderman- of Superman-cape, maar daar bleek geen geschikte stof voor in huis te zijn.
Er zaten wel verschillende kleuren fleece in de voorraadkisten en op FleeceFun.com vond ik een leuk patroontje voor een muts.

Today, I felt like working on an easy project with fabric from the stash. As it's almost my nephews birthday, I decided to make him a little present. My first thought was a Spiderman or Superman cape, but I couldn't find the right fabric.
However, I did find some fleece fabric in different colors and there are some nice hat patterns on FleeceFun.com. So a hat it would be.

Scoodie

Deze scoodie (sjaal + capuchon) is gebaseerd op de Cuddly Cat Crochet Scoodie van Tamara Kelly.

Aangezien ik niet wist hoe lang de sjaal moest worden heb ik het patroon iets aangepast en heb ik de sjaal in de breedte gehaakt in plaats van in de lengte. Daarnaast heb ik ook de steek aangepast: 2 toeren met vasten ipv 1 toer met stokjes.

Mijn werkwijze voor de sjaal (waar afwijkend van het bovenstaande patroon):
-een ketting van 22 lossen
-toer 1-8 vasten door 2 lussen (21 steken)
-toer 9-x vasten door achterste lus (21 steken)
-laatste 8 toeren vasten door 2 lussen (21 steken)

Doordat de sjaal relatief breed is heb ik de capuchon asymmetrisch geplaatst op ongeveer 1/4 van de totale lengte van de sjaal. Hierdoor hoef je maar 1 kant om te slaan en wordt het niet al te dik.

Het patroon voor de capuchon is echt een aanrader. Door eerst vlak naast het midden te meerderen en vervolgens vlak naast het midden te minderen ontstaat een hele mooie ronding. De enige wijziging die ik heb toegepast is de steek (2 toeren vasten ipv 1 toer stokjes).

This scoodie (scarf + hoodie) is based on Tamara Kelly's Cuddly Cat Crochet Scoodie.

As I wasn't sure about the length of the scarf when I started, I adjusted the pattern a little by starting with the width, instead of the length. Also, I used 2 rows of single crochet instead of 1 row of double crochet.

Scarf tutorial (changes from the original pattern):
-chain 22 
-row 1-8 single crochet through both loops (21 stitches)
-row 9-x single crochet through 1 loop (21 stitches)
-last 8 rows single crochet through both loops (21 stitches)

To prevent the scoodie from becoming bulky, I placed the hoody asymmetrical at about 1/4 of the length of the scarf. Now you only have to wrap 1 end around your neck.

I really liked the hoodie pattern. By increasing stitches just off center, followed by decreasing just off center, you get a nice rounded hood. The only adjustment I made is the type of stitch (2 rows of single crochet instead of 1 row of double crochet).
