Een onesie voor J, aangezien er weinig leuke exemplaren voor jongens te vinden zijn. Hij heeft aangegeven welke kleuren hij graag zou willen en uiteindelijk hebben we samen beslist welke stoffen het moesten worden. 

Het verzoek was een onesie met capuchon en kangaroo-zak ipv zij-zakken. Het Jalie patroon was gemakkelijk aan te passen met een capuchon van Greenstyle Creations en het patroon van de zak is geïnspireerd op een patroon van 5 out of 4.

Het eindresultaat: een blije J met een onesie waar hij nog even in kan groeien.

Fun set

Vers van de pers: een leuke kleurrijke set. Nichtje paste haar Loulouxe skort (Jalie) niet meer en vroeg of ik een nieuwe voor haar wilde maken. Nadat ze de stof goedgekeurd had, kwam de vraag of ik er ook een hemdje bij wilde maken. Natuurlijk, wil ik dat! 

Just finished this lovely colourful set. Little niece has outgrown her first Loulouxe skort (Jalie) and requested a new one. When asked if she liked the fabric, she asked if she could have a matching tank. Well, of course!  

 

Haar vorige Loulouxe had een contrasterend achterpand. Deze keer hebben we voor een 'effen' rok gekozen met een zwart broekje. Met zakken! 

For the Loulouxe, we decided on a 'one'-color skirt and black shorts with pockets (who doesn't like pockets…).  

 

Aangezien ze een voorkeur heeft voor hemdjes met een racerback, wilde ik de Jalie 2653 crop top verlengen. Helaas heb ik (nog) niet kunnen bedenken hoe ik dat zou moeten doen: het patroon heeft nogal veel negatieve rek. Daarom is het uiteindelijk de Anne-Marie Tank, ook een Jalie patroon, geworden. Dit was een voor mij nieuw patroon en de 'how to' video was erg nuttig, vooral voor het elastiekgedeelte van de ingenaaide top. 

 

As she likes wearing racerback tops, I wanted to try to lengthen the Jalie 2653 top crop to a full length. Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to do that, yet. So, we decided on the Anne-Marie Tank, also a Jalie pattern. As this was a new-to-me pattern, the 'How to sew the Anne-Marie dress'-video was very helpful. Especially for sewing in the elastic. 

 

 

Tijdens mijn zoektocht naar patronen voor leuke sportkleding kwam ik de Bralette van Boo! Designs tegen en het leek mij een erg leuk patroon voor meisjes. Extra bonus: het patroon is gratis te downloaden van de Boo! Designs website. Perfect voor het nichtje. Aangezien er niet veel stof nodig is, besloot ik deze top als extraatje bij de set te doen. Het neon-gele elastische biaisband geeft het net iets extra's… 

 

Recently, when searching for fun active wear patterns, I came across the Boo! Designs Bralette. It looked like a fun pattern for girls and, as a bonus, is available for free on their website. Perfect for little niece. Therefore this will be a surprise addition to the set. You don't need a lot of fabric and it IS fun to sew. The neon yellow fold-over elastic just adds that little extra…

Isabelle shorts - Jalie

As I really loved the look of the Isabelle leggings I made for J, I decided to also make a pair for myself. Short length. I really like the result. They look amazing and are very comfortable to wear.
The picture doesn't do the actual colours justice.

Jalie Clara

For some reason I like to colour match sports bras and shorts/leggings. the fabrics don't have to be the same as long as the colours are similar enough or complement each other.
Recently I bought a sports bra with bright coloured trimmings, but didn't have any pole shorts to match. But: I love Jalie's Clara pattern and I did have some black spandex with a bright coloured print (a coupon I added to another order to check out the fabric) Lucky me! 

This time I decided to go with a size V, instead of the usual size U graded to size V legs, just to add some variation to my tights collection. Also, I decided to experiment with using an elastic foot on the serger while adding the waist elastic. Therefore I switched from 1cm wide elastic to 6mm wide to fit into the serger seam. I won't do that again. I didn't like the feel of the smaller elastic while wearing the shorts and they didn't stay up as nicely. So, I took the waistband apart, removed the thin elastic, re-serged the waistbands together, added the wider elastic the 'normal' way using the sewing machine and re-attached the waistband to the shorts. Now they feel very comfortable!

Since the pattern was released I loved it: Jalie 3901 (Kate), and so did little niece when her mom showed it to her. Needless to say that I picked this pattern to make her a birthday present. As I needed a break from all the pink, I decided on a blue/green mystique for colour and hope she likes it as well.

The leotard came together like a charm and looks gorgeous. Shorts 3247 and scrunchies 2792 complement the set.

 







Unfortunately the leotard turned out too small (width wise) and she couldn't get her arms is as the neckline was too small. So I took the leotard apart and added a 2cm-wide black band to both sides and removed the neck band. Instead I added elastic to the wrong side of the fabric, turned it inside and top-stitched the elastic down. It doesn't look as professional as the original, but it's better than having to start all over again.

Finally, J's birthday present (from 3 years ago) is finished! This summer she selected the patterns and picked the fabrics. I am happy I made a test set first, as the shorts turned out to be a little too small.

The top is a size T, with V-length straps and length of the part on the back where the straps attach. To accommodate removable cups I added an extra layer of lining (combining both front pieces to create a single piece front). Also added 1cm of length to the mesh overlay.

The only change made to the leggings are the addition of 2cm to the length.

Het is er deze zomer eindelijk van gekomen: J heeft haar verjaardagscadeautje van 2 jaar geleden uitgezocht. Het wordt een sportieve set met een sport-bh/top en een capri legging. Wat betreft de patronen is Jalie weer favoriet: de top wordt de Pika en de legging de Isabelle.

J's verjaardagscadeautje van dit jaar was een test setje om te kijken of de maten goed zijn. Deze set heb ik gemaakt van stoffen die ik al in huis had, waarvan een ook gebruikt is voor deze leggings.

Achteraf ben ik erg blij dat ik deze proefset gemaakt heb, want het broekje bleek toch wat aan de kleine kant.

In addition to the Valentine pole set, I made another sports bra to go with the shorts. This time using the racer-back option from Jalie 2563.

Valentine pole set

 "Please wear something red during the pole fitness class on Valentines Day", a request I was not (yet) prepared for. Luckily I bought some beautiful black-red-pink spandex recently and also had a piece of black performance fabric in the stash. Although the Clara shorts (Jalie 3887) are my go-to pattern, I decided to go with the shorts from Jalie 2563 this time as they have a nice little insert on the leg. 
For the bra I wasn't sure: Jalie 3247 with criss-cross straps or Greenstyle Creations power sports bra with strappy U back. After finishing the bottoms, the power sports bra seemed to complement the style/ fabric best.

Pretty in Pink

Little niece started with gymnastics and asked me if I would make her a leotard. How could I resist... 
So I gave her the choice of a couple of Jalie leotards (2792, 3241 and 3464) and shorts. It wasn't a hard decision: it had to be the X-back leotard with the 3247E shorts. 
After showing her some fabrics from my stash to give her an idea of the type of fabrics and some colours, she preferred stretch velours. After looking at some webshops with her mum, she choose 2 or 3 fabrics from a shop that is also an actual store at driving distance. Therefore I decided to go there myself and have a look at the actual colours. White, bright pink and silver it would be!

As little niece is tall and skinny, I lengthened the leotard pattern to a size L (including the arm and leg openings). A size K length would probably given her enough room for growth as well. 
For the shorts I cut a size J, based on her hip measurements. One size up would have given a better fit in the back and in the future I will probably add elastic to the the waistband (or just adding elastic to the waist, pattern option D).

When I gave her new gymnastics set, she loved it! She didn't take it off for the rest of the day and her mum told me that niece would sleep in it if she was allowed to. For me, there is no bigger compliment...

ETA (apr '19): turns out that what I thought was room for growth (wrinkled shoulderbands) isn't that. Mum has already asked if I could make the same leotard in a larger size. It might be that the elastic is too tight and in that case it might be worth unpicking the elastic (although I used a triple zigzag stitch...). Otherwise I'll make little niece a new leotard and probably also some larger shorts (with elastic in the waistband)

Jalie 3887 Clara shorts

De vorige keer dat ik dit type stof gebruikte, die travel stof schijnt te heten, had mijn naaimachine grote moeite met het netjes stikken van de naden en zomen. Uiteindelijk heb ik er toen voor gekozen om de zomen met de hand vast te zetten. Gelukkig had de lockmachine geen moeite met deze stof, waardoor de naden van de yoga pants (Jalie 3022) toch netjes geworden zijn.

Aangezien de Clara legging (Jalie 3887) ook voornamelijk met de lockmachine in elkaar gezet kan worden, durfde ik het aan om weer travel stof te gebruiken. Al zag ik wel wat op tegen het zomen, aangezien een kort strak pijpje wat lastiger met de hand te zomen is dan een lange wijde pijp. Om het gevecht met de naaimachine uit te weg te gaan, besloot ik het elastiek in de tailleband weg te laten. Met een dunnere lycra zou ik het niet aangedurft hebben, maar aangezien de travel stof wat steviger is en er een naad aan de bovenkant van de boord zit denk ik dat het goed zou moeten gaan.

In de hoop dat de zoom toch met de naaimachine gedaan zou kunnen worden, ben ik wat gaan experimenteren met naalden. Een stretchnaald bleef steken overslaan, net als een universele variant. Na de laatste 4mm tweelingnaald gebroken te hebben door de spoel niet netjes in het spoelhuis te plaatsen, een 3mm tweelingnaald geprobeerd. Gelukkig zijn de wonderen de wereld nog niet uit: het werkte! Nu heb ik dus een net afgewerkt broekje en ben ik vol goede moed om ook de overige 2 1/2m travel stof te verwerken tot sportkleding.

Binnenkort maar eens proberen of deze 'travel' versie van de Clara shorts net zo lekker zit als de eerdere versie van lycra.

The last time I used this type of fabric, a spandex type of fabric but thicker and apparently called travel fabric in the Netherlands, my sewing machine had a very hard time stitching it. In the end I chose to hem by hand, out of desperation. Luckily, the serger wasn't as picky and could I use it for the seams of the yoga pants (Jalie 3022).

As the Clara shorts (Jalie 3887) can be surged as well, I took the chance to use the 'travel fabric' for another pair. Although I still wasn't looking forward to hemming a short, snug leg by hand. To avoid a fight with the sewing machine I decided to discard the waistband elastic. I wouldn't have done that with regular spandex, but by using a fabric with more body in combination with the seam at the top of the waistband I hope it'll work out OK.

Stubborn me wanted to try hemming with the sewing machine again, so I experimented a little with different needles. A stretch needle didn't work, nor did a regular one. After breaking my last 4mm twin needle on the bobbin (didn't place it properly in the bobbin case), I replaced it by a 3mm one and.... it worked! A miracle just happened! So now, I have a perfectly finished pair of shorts and lots of confidence to turn the other 2 1/2m of this fabric into sports wear.

Hopefully this 'travel' pair fits as great as the spandex pair. If I have to judge just by the looks of them.....

Jalie 3241 - X-back leotard

Hopefully the X-back leotard works as an alternative for a crop top during pole fitness class. I expect there may be some difficulties with more advanced techniques, but we'll see.

OK, so according to the measurement chart I measure a S bust, U waist and hips, and a Y girth. Therefore I decided to trace a size U, grade back to size T around the bust and back to an U under the armpit, and add 2x 4 1/2cm to the length. It turned out that adding 9cm to the girth was too much, I could have gotten away with adding only 2cm to the waist area.
 
The leotard being too long might be part of the reason why the straps don't lie flat on back, in addition to the elastic not being wide enough (6mm instead of 10mm). After cutting the neckline elastic I discovered there wasn't enough left for the armholes and the leg openings. Unfortunately this specific type of elastic was sold out, so I settled on another type only to discover that it wasn't as wide as they said it was. :-( Still I wanted to finish the leotard, as curious about the fit as I was, so I did use the new elastic anyway. For the leg openings it isn't too bad, but the straps don't look as they should. Another reason could be that I added length to the straps in the wrong spot, although I added the length perpendicular to the grain line. 

I AM happy with the front: The yoke ends exactly where I wanted it to end and gives good coverage.
