Sweet Dreams Patrick

Yes, I do indeed post pictures of my 'just off the hoop' projects. As I am not sure what I am going to do with this finished project, I will leave it unwashed, and therefor not ironed, for now.

Halloween Witch

This Halloween Witch by Durene Jones was such a fun stitch, well except for the ground. For some reason I had a hard time stitching it. When I first saw the design I fell in love: that hair, the purples and greens, and the casual style did it for me.

For now, I have decided not to stitch the wording and the border that are included in the pattern as I really, really like her the way she is now (I might add the french knots later. But only after some practice, as I've never done them before). Also, I have zero ideas about how to fully finish this project. Right now she's still on the frame in my lap-stand and I love looking at her.

Please note that the witch is stitched in the original colour scheme, but that I changed some of the colours of the ground, and one of the colours in the stars and the broom.

Sinterklaas

Cadeau-tasjes / Gift bags

In an effort to reduce the amount of (wrapping) paper used in this household, I recently started making gift bags out of fabric from my stash.

The size of the bag is determined by the size of the gift(s), and the size and shape of the fabric. I use a single layer of fabric that I sew into a rectangle, leaving the top 4-5cm of (at least) 1 side seam open to form the opening of the drawstring tunnel later on. To make the tunnel, I fold the fabric towards the inside (about 2-2.5cm) and stitch it in place. Add the drawstring and you're done.

DIY x-stitch accessory

The lapstand I used to stitch the corgi's has scroll bars with velcro on it. For the former project I used sticky velcro that I attached to the aida, so it would attach to the scroll bars. Although I finished that project in June, it just came off the frame. To be replaced by the Halloween Witch (Durene Jones). But I didn't have any sticky velcro left over and getting the right tension for stitching was impossible without attaching the aida to the scroll bars. So I took some regular velcro and sewed some scrap pieces of fashion  fabric to it. Than I hand-stitched the aida to the fashion fabric and stuck the velcro to the scroll bars. All ready to stitch!

Welkom / Welcome

A small cross-stitch to make a welcome-little-one-card.

The pattern has 2 suggestions for the feet. I choose the most simple pattern and used DMC 4507 to make it more interesting/colourful. First, I stitched the word 'Welkom' (Welcome) with a dark grey thread, but it made it hard to read. So after frogging, DMC 310 to the rescue, although I would have preferred not to use black. The name is stitched in DMC 956. The font is from Pinterest (original source unknown).

Unfortunately I forgot to take some pictures of the finished project.

Fun set

Just finished this lovely colourful set. Little niece has outgrown her first Loulouxe skort (Jalie) and requested a new one. When asked if she liked the fabric, she asked if she could have a matching tank. Well, of course!

For the Loulouxe, we decided on a 'one'-color skirt and black shorts with pockets (who doesn't like pockets…).

As she likes wearing racerback tops, I wanted to try to lengthen the Jalie 2653 top crop to a full length. Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to do that, yet. So, we decided on the Anne-Marie Tank, also a Jalie pattern. As this was a new-to-me pattern, the 'How to sew the Anne-Marie dress'-video was very helpful. Especially for sewing in the elastic.

Recently, when searching for fun active wear patterns, I came across the Boo! Designs Bralette. It looked like a fun pattern for girls and, as a bonus, is available for free on their website. Perfect for little niece. Therefore this will be a surprise addition to the set. You don't need a lot of fabric and it IS fun to sew. The neon yellow fold-over elastic just adds that little extra…

Lots of Love

A little stitchy surprise for some of my best friends. I do not recommend stitching a pattern 4 times, so I made little changes. Similar, but not the same. Finished in a little hoop (~10cm diameter) and some fun fabric at the back to fully finish them.

Welsh Corgi's

Labour of Love.

I have been working on this piece for several years. It is based on a photo of 2 of my parents (former) dogs.

To convert the photo to a cross stitch pattern I used a program written by 'Chestnut Pens'. It took some time to get to know the program, but it has endless possibilities.

As you can see in the stats below, it is stitched with mostly blended threads (and thus very time consuming and slow stitching). Luckily I was able to find fabric in one of the sky-colours, so I didn't have to stitch those. This also gives the final work some extra depth.

Slim Dolman

As I love the dolman-type sleeve tops from Cation Designs, I decided to give Halla's slim dolman top a try as well.
To make a wearable muslin I used some fabric from stash with a little less stretch than what the pattern is designed for. According to the size chart I needed to grade from a 6/8 bust and waist to a 10/12 waist, so I did.
It fits reasonably well. Next time I'll probably widen the sleeves a little and shorten the waistband.

X-factor sport top

When I first saw pictures of the X-factor tankini/ bikini I fell in love with the design of the back. However, after purchasing the pattern it took me a long time to actually use it, because it did look a little intimidating to me. Looking for a smallish project I finally bit the bullet and made the bikini top, that I will wear as a sports top.

The sizing chart put me in a size S. Looking at other people's makes I noticed the top started relatively high under the arms. With other tops (of different pattern makers) I noticed I usually need some slightly larger armholes, so I decided to a 2cm to the straps (1cm in front and 1cm to the back). This also lowered the neckline slightly. No other alterations were made to the pattern at this time.

Putting the top together was not as intimidating as I thought it would be. The tutorial that comes with the pattern also includes a section on how to do the binding, which was very helpful.

The first fitting showed that the top was a little too long, so I took out 1cm (the one I added to the straps) at the bottom. I also noticed the bottom band and the elastic were too wide. Since I needed to remove the bottom band anyway, I shortened both the bottom band and the elastic by about 4cm. This gives a much better fit. For a more supportive feel I may need to size down or use a less stretchy fabric (the pattern calls for >50% both ways and I used an at least 75% stretch fabric). Next time, I'll probably make some more changes to the fit, but I'd like to get some wear out of this one before I do.

All in all, I am very happy with how this top turned out. Maybe an X-factor slim tank next time?

Isabelle shorts - Jalie

As I really loved the look of the Isabelle leggings I made for J, I decided to also make a pair for myself. Short length. I really like the result. They look amazing and are very comfortable to wear.

Jalie Clara

For some reason I like to colour match sports bras and shorts/leggings. the fabrics don't have to be the same as long as the colours are similar enough or complement each other.
Recently I bought a sports bra with bright coloured trimmings, but didn't have any pole shorts to match. But: I love Jalie's Clara pattern and I did have some black spandex with a bright coloured print (a coupon I added to another order to check out the fabric) Lucky me!

This time I decided to go with a size V, instead of the usual size U graded to size V legs, just to add some variation to my tights collection. Also, I decided to experiment with using an elastic foot on the serger while adding the waist elastic. Therefore I switched from 1cm wide elastic to 6mm wide to fit into the serger seam. I won't do that again. I didn't like the feel of the smaller elastic while wearing the shorts and they didn't stay up as nicely. So, I took the waistband apart, removed the thin elastic, re-serged the waistbands together, added the wider elastic the 'normal' way using the sewing machine and re-attached the waistband to the shorts. Now they feel very comfortable!

Sundance Jacket

In search of a pattern for a comfortable jacket I came across Sundance Jacket by Greenstyle Creations and loved the look. To give it a try I used some leftover fabric from the 'Kuschelkleid' by AnniNanni

The pattern has several options and I decided to go with:
-plain back
-stand-up collar
-long sleeves without cuffs
-in-seam pockets

Some changes/adjustments that were made:
-According to the size chart I would have to grade from size XS - M - S, but I decided to go with a full size S instead (I like my garments to have a looser fit at the top/ near the armpits).
-There might be a purpose for the centre back seam, but I decided to eliminate it.
-no zippers in the pockets

The zipper I had on hand turned out to be a little too short (60cm, should have bought 65cm), so I decided to eliminate the zipper lining to be able to adjust the zipper placement somewhat. Otherwise construction was as per instructions, which were easy to follow.

Some issues I'll have to keep in mind/ fix next time:
-Enough room around bust/arm scye area and hip, but the waist is a little tight --> should have graded as indicated by the size chart
-Tight lower sleeve --> widen towards wrist
-Use, and maybe shorten, a 65cm zipper
-The hem on back stands out a little --> hem facing too long? , fabric stretched?
-Tape in shoulder seams to prevent stretching of the seam
-Add pocket zippers
-In case of fully lined jacket: size up 1 or 2 sizes

All in all it is a fun pattern to sew and the jacket looks amazing. The next one will be in a bright red sweatshirt fabric and fully lined with red cotton lycra.

Hooded Studio to Street Crop Top

After finishing the muslin I changed a few things before cutting into the fabric for the 'official' top:
-Based on my overbust measurements I needed a size S top, as I did for the muslin. As I thought that turned out too big, I decided to go with my full bust measurements this time and size down to a XS.
-Than I added 3cm to the length of the top and the sleeves as I have a long torso.
-As I prefer my sleeves not to be tight, I widened the armholes to be a similar to a size S by adding 1cm to the bottom of the sleeve insert (?).
-And for the same reason I also graded the sleeves from a size S at the top to a size M at the bottom.

I also decided to use the hood add-on this time (and I love it!). I did make some changes, however:
-Added lining
-Removed the 'fold-over fabric' from the pattern, as the cording could run between the outer fabric and lining.
To make the cording, I used a strip of lining fabric.

Love how this top turned out! Both the fit and the fabrics. This pattern is so much fun and the top is extremely comfy. The lining made the hood a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me.
